She feels instinctively that a terrorist cell is at work and when she reports this to Charles Wetherby, the Director of Counter Terrorism, a surveillance operation is immediately put into place. An attack seems imminent. So, Liz is surprised when Wetherby takes her off the case - this is just her sort of operation. However, Wetherby has some very disturbing news. As her colleagues try to counter an impending terrorist strike, Liz must use all her skills to find out who the mole is, and what their intentions are, before it is too late. In the following spring she returned to live with an Afghan family for several months. For more than 20 years Sultan Khan defied the authorities - be they Communist or Taliban - in order to supply books to the people of Kabul. He was arrested, interrogated and imprisoned by the Communists, and watched illiterate Taliban soldiers burn piles of his books in the street. He even resorted to hiding most of his stock in attics all over Kabul. But while Khan is passionate in his love of books and hatred of censorship, he is also a committed Muslim with strict views on family life. As an outsider, Seierstad is able to move between the private world of the women - including Khan's two wives - and the more public lives of the men. And so we learn of proposals and marriages, suppression and abuse of power, crime and punishment. The result is a moving portrait of a family and a clear-eyed assessment of a country struggling to free itself from history.

Average Rating from 2 reviews

  09.04.2008 Eye Opening- revealing book
A really revealing book that opened my eyes to many unknown ways. This month we all chose the same book - quirky title 'The Voluptuous delight of peanut butter and jam '– Lauren Liebenberg.
Everyone enjoyed this book and would recommend it to other groups – *don’t read this review if you don’t want to know what happens. A deeply moving story of life in Rhodesia (pre Mugable) where the first stirrings of unrest are beginning to be felt, told from the viewpoint of the elder of two young girls - sisters. A magical childhood with evocative descriptions of the wild, nature, animals and a way of life now disappeared. Family secrets hinted at heighten the girls’ curiousity and the mystery is solved by the arrival of a family ‘skeleton’ in the shape of their illegitimate cousin. Legends and a mixture of religion and paganism shape the girls' lives and all is how childhood should be – freedom and fantasy until Ronin, with his cruel nature begins to cause problems. In fact, as soon as they got the little dog and were so happy with it, I knew the animal was doomed. The sadness in the family is heartbreaking until Nyree the elder sister, eventually starts to come to terms with her sister, cias' death. The group agreed that although it was a choice we didn’t think we’d enjoy, it was ‘unputdownable’. Different story about a different way of life.
Another interesting entirely different item was something Keith brought from NLW. A borrower brought some old documents in and just left them with staff, explaining they'd belonged to his Dad. The main item was a 6ft long map of Earlstown and the old railway, offices and factories started by a 'Mr. Earl' - Earlstown - (the clues are there!) Some places are identifiable, some have now got Tesco on top of them - one intriguing placename - 'Lark Hill ' about which we could find no information. Any very old borrowers out there (older than me) with any knowledge of this place? Told from the viewpoint of the two women who are the main characters of the story. Also it’s interesting to have an insight as a westerner, into the country of Afghanistan which most of us have very little knowledge of. I, for one, was surprised in Mariams description of her second house, that they had electricity. I assumed the houses were just stone huts. As the Taliban took over, it reinforces our impressions of the fanatical nature of that government.
Some characteristics are the same from country to country – we too have battered wives, but unlike Mariam and Laila, there is help available in our country – not an option for those two. I couldn’t reconcile Mariams acceptance of her fate throughout the book, but what else could she have done? Her realisation of the only way to help Laila by accepting death also was hard to understand – because we have such an easy life compared to theirs.
When Mariam and Laila started to dig the well in the backyard, I really thought (because I read thrillers) they were planning to kill Rasheed and bury him in the garden – who could be bothered to keep burying the TV and unearthing it all the time? I suppose they took for granted they had to do what they had to do.
Thank goodness the ending was as happy as it could be in that war-torn country.
An intense story depicting the strength of the human spirit and certainly a book well worth reading – but I found it very harrowing and real – almost non-fictional, as we’d followed the actions in Afghanistan during the hunt for Bin Laden. I had to read a thriller afterwards with famililar twists and plots to take my mind away from the anguish and unjustice that some people have to live amidst.

Tea break

Got a couple of minutes?
