RE: Favourite Book - The Poisonwood Bible.

There have been quite a few that I've really enjoyed. The Poisonwood Bible was very good. Although, when I read the synopsis I thought I wouldn't like it.
It was well written and I could clearly imagine what it must've been like to be a stranger in Africa. One of the themes of the book was the idea of western culture being the right way and that people in Africa don't know what they're doing. I think this is still to some extent the attitude of western leaders. The thing that sticks in my mind from the book was the father planting crops in the yard on a flat patch of land, and the native housekeeper saying that they should be planted on mounds instead. The man thought he knew best and ignored her advice. When the rain came, all the crops were washed away. Proving that just because you come from a "civilised" society, you don't know what is best for native people! Anyone else have an opinion on The Poisonwood Bible?

i also enjoyed "Poisonwood Bible" - thought the contrast between life out in the Congo, against the period of the swinging Sixties elsewhere, was quite shocking at times. And that father....!!!!!
My other favourites were "Small Island" by Andrea Levy - and also "We need to talk about Kevin" (which raised LOTS of discussion !)

Hi to everybody, newbie here. My favourite has got to be The Kite Runner - very poignant, shocking, beautifully written - closely followed by The Poisonwood Bible. Didn't enjoy "Kevin" too much as I found the characters very irritating (sorry! to those who loved it!!)

Anyway, nice to be here . . .

Hi sistertwix,
Welcome to the forum.

I enjoyed the Kite Runner too. It was very well written and a moving story that i thought gave the reader and insight into what life must be like in Afganistan.

If you enjoyed reading the Kite Runner you will definately enjoy Khaled Hosseni's next book A Thousand Splendid Suns. Which is also set in Afganistan but the story is about the lives of two women. We will be doing A Thousand Splendid Suns I think in March or April. So it's something to look forward too. I think that it will become a favourite amongst the group.

I didn't read "Kevin" to give an opinion. I did read the Sara Water's one that went back to front and thought that was rubbish, as was that Jodi Picoult one about child abuse! They were that bad, I can't remember what they were called!

Many thanks for the warm welcome moominsquidge,

I am looking forward to reading Hosseni's next book - purely because I enjoyed The Kite Runner so much and will be interesting to see how he moves on from that. I think it must always be difficult to follow on from a novel that has received such high acclaim . . . I was looking forward to the film, but alas, they are no longer showing it at the cinema!!!

I agree about the Sarah Water's one - wasn't at all memorable and didn't read Jodi Piccoult's "The Perfect Match" - (I think that is the one you may be referring to . . .?) However, I did read another of Piccoult's called "My Sister's Keeper" which I thoroughly enjoyed right up until the end when I thought she absolutely ruined it!!

Just started the latest by Anne Tyler which is the group read and look forward to posting comments on that . . .

Just finished "The Interpretation of Murder" and am so glad I decided to read it - thought it extremely clever story line and very well written.

Anyway, many thanks for the welcome, hope to be posting here for a long time to come!!
